dancinbutterfly asked:

Why are they taking are reblogging? It is the lifeblood of Tumblr. It is the thing that makes this site special.

What was the logic?

Reblogs aren’t going anywhere. It’s the backbone of Tumblr. We are working on making reblogs searchable, which is a long overdue feature!

Okay then can I get clarification on what, specifically does it mean that staff wants to get rid or change “reblog chains” because as I understand it - what I’m doing with you right now is a reblog chain. Im not thrilled about condescending reblogs if it’s involuntary but how are the reblog chains changing or what does it mean if we’re not keeping them? Because as I said this? Seems like a reblog chain to me. How can we keep reblogging and not reblog chains?

Ok, we’re gonna expand on:
“Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads.”

Reblogs chains that run really long are hard to understand, especially if they’re repeated over and over and over again on your dashboard. So we would like to test out if we collapse some part of the thread will it make the experience easier for users to follow the conversation?

A potential implementation of this is how Reddit has “6 more replies” at the bottom of the conversation. We are not doing this because we saw Reddit did it. We are trying this because we have seen a lot of feedback from users who are frustrated by very long reblog chains that they see multiple times back-to-back on their dashboards.

But a key thing to note is the conversation would always be accessible. In this experiment, you can always expand reblogs, and remember, we aren’t removing any reblogs.

I was gonna say “what you think he had insurance???” but 1) at least in the early aughts to mid-teens, NY was one of the less excruciating states to get medicaid in, and 2) he was a minor and it’s a LOT easier to get medicaid for a minor, especially when said minor’s legal guardians are retirees on fixed incomes I’d wager.

So yeah they’re all just fuckin dumbasses! I love them.

This is why I think it would be peak comedy for the radioactive spider to be of a non-venomous species and for there to be a scene of a new Peter Parker/Spiderperson looking up the spider’s features or posting a photo to an identification subbredit before being informed of the fact that nothing will happen

entemologist reddit: oh yeah, that one’s venom isn’t strong enough to cause anything other than a bit of localized pain at the bite site, no worries.

Peter Parker the next morning, stuck to his ceiling: Well someone fucking LIED!!!!

listen I say this with patience bc some people may genuinely have not thought about this before but if you firmly say “AI art is terribly unethical and steals from artists” (which is correct) but then turn around and use voice AIs to generate songs/voice lines that sound like your favourite voice actors or singers……………………………………that is also AI art and it is also terribly unethical

truly, no harsh noise project can ever approach the sheer auditory torture of existing in the same room as someone scrolling tiktok, like professional bad sound engineers couldn’t make a listening experience this unpleasant if they tried

I watched the live with the CEO, here is the tl;dr

The good news:

  • Chronological dash is here to stay! Whether you have to toggle it weekly or new users default to “For you” was not elaborated on but at least that’s confirmed.
  • Custom themes are here to stay! Once again, may be buried for all I know but, for sure will remain an option.
  • Search updates are in the works!!!!

The neutral news:

  • Tumblr is seriously in the red financially and needs more support, Ad-free for example is not widely used
  • They would not comment on the suggestion to bring back NSFW behind a paywall (which we all know would get them a boatload of money)
  • They’re possibly going to add a donation system like Ao3 and Wikipedia.
  • They would “rather not” sell data to make up the costs
  • Most of staff are pre-2010 tumblr users including the CEO who joined in 2007, so they do actually use the site and have for a long time

The bad news:

  • Condensed reblogs/removing reblog chains is going forward. The reason cited was to meet “certain expectations” of users coming from other social media, which isn’t good.
  • Disability features (specifically turning off flashing ads for epileptics) was met with a request to purchase Ad-free

Overall it was more chill than I expected, @photomatt and @zingring seem to be far more in tune with the userbase than u/spez.

Under the bad news column:

I did ask our ads team to investigate any kind of vibrancy or flashing on ads - we do not want to accidentally trigger seizures or cause distress with flashing etc. Buying ad-free (or gifting ad-free to someone else) is always an option, but that is not the solution (and of course, some folks simply can’t afford it). Sorry that it sounded dismissive in the session! That was not my intent.

Condensed reblogs/removing reblog chains is going forward.

Depending on how that looks/if it can be turned off, that could kill the site as surely as removing chronological following only feeds would…

We want reblogs, not rooted posts with comments under them. At that point you are just Facebook…

“To meet certain expectations of users coming from other social media” — NO!!! They are LEAVING the other social media to come here!!!!!! So DONT MAKE THIS SITE LIKE THE ONES THAT EVERYONE IS LEAVING.

Theyre not used to the layout here, that’s fine; they’ll acclimatise. Everyone is leaving the other sites in droves because the other sites SUCK. Don’t replicate the sites that everyone is leaving!!

At the VERY LEAST, make it customisable, so that we can turn it on or off as we prefer. But good grief, I cannot understand why, when everyone is coming here saying “I’ve left [site] because it committed the crime of becoming bad,” this site is going, “oh, ok, so you want us to follow their footsteps?”

a weird amount of Fandom People but internet leftists in general seem to be completely unable to separate discomfort from harm

there’s like zero consideration for what the scale or context is or if the discomfort is based on anything objectively harmful it’s just one person saying “i’m uncomfortable” with whatever motivations they might have and suddenly it’s causing grave harm to an entire group of marginalized people and anyone who doesn’t agree is a bad malicious person

this is how we get people banning depictions of pre op/non op trans people from trans zines bc one person is Uncomfortable with it and then it gets phrased as like. we are banning anything but the most perfect of cis passing trans people as a way of Combating harmful trans fetishizing and we are eternally grateful to this one guy who was uncomfortable with anything else. this is a real example btw

People should be uncomfortable occasionally. It’s good for you.

one time another trans guy accused me of trans fetishization because i drew a trans man who, quote, “looks like a girl”, and it was making him dysphoric, when the character in question was a self-insert based on the way i look irl

“this makes me uncomfortable” and “this is bad” are two ENTIRELY SEPARATE STATEMENTS and it is honestly STUNNING how many people conflate the two.

Even if something is upsetting to you that doesn’t mean it is harming you.
